The 7th edition of Arte e Musica tra Pelmo e Civetta, the International Festival of Ancient Music that animates the summer in Val di Zoldo, is about to start. From Tuesday 23 July to Sunday 18 August 2024, a rich programme of eight concerts with internationally renowned artists and three collateral events conceived to create new synergies with the local realities, aiming at enhancing the riches of Val di Zoldo.
Born in 2018 from an idea of maestro Andrea Marcon to promote the music, places and artistic treasures of the Val di Zoldo, the Festival is organised by the Antiqua Vox Foundation with the support of the Cariverona Foundation, the Municipality of Val di Zoldo, the Chamber of Commerce of Treviso – Belluno|Dolomites and with the patronage of the Veneto Region, the Province of Belluno and the Christian Communities of Zoldo and Zoppè di Cadore. The artistic direction is entrusted to the masters Paolo Da Col and Giulio De Nardo, who thus present the 2024 programme:
The Festival opens on Tuesday 23 July, at 7 p.m., with an organ concert in memory of Donato Casal, a generous benefactor of the valley. At the keyboards of the Callido organ in the Church of San Floriano in Pieve di Val di Zoldo, the German organist, harpsichordist and conductor Jörg Halubek will sit.
The Festival continues with a musical weekend involving the Spanish trio Morenos: José Miguel Moreno, lute, Emilio Moreno, violin, brothers and internationally renowned musicians, and Inés Moreno, harpsichordist and José Miguel’s daughter. The three musicians will perform in various formations, accompanying the audience on a real journey through Europe from the Renaissance to Classicism.
This year, for the first time, the Festival will offer the opportunity to appreciate the charm of medieval music thanks to the ensemble De Vulgari. In addition to the evening concert in the ‘A. Rizzardini’ multi-purpose hall in Fusine, the artists will perform in the morning in a musical moment at the Ristoro Da Bepi in Pian del Crep, which will also involve the Gelatieri Zoldani. In fact, Val di Zoldo is also famous worldwide for the art of homemade ice cream. Ice Cream and Music is the name of the event where the Master Ice Cream Makers will illustrate to the public the ancient art of making ice cream accompanied by the medieval notes of the De Vulgari ensemble, immersed in the magnificent scenery of the Dolomites, between Pelmo and Civetta.
Not only music, but also art. On Saturday, 10 August in the church of Fusine, a conference will unveil the hidden treasures of Val di Zoldo, with a special focus on the eighteenth-century works present in the area. Giorgio Fossaluzza, professor of Art History at the University of Verona, will present to the public some of the most significant 18th century works preserved in the valley.
The Festival also offers the opportunity to hear the voice of the Valley’s ancient organs, which are the result of the highest level of craftsmanship. According to organ builder Costanzo Antegnati, ‘these organs cannot be made without the help of workers in the mecanical arts, almost all of them’ (1608). From the working of iron for the mechanical transmission, to the working of wood for the mechanization; from the treatment of different metals for the manufacture of the pipes, to the working of the skins for the bellows, to the intonation of the phonic material and the timbre choices, which require high competence, sensitivity and musical taste. Once again this year, the Festival will highlight this rich heritage: the Callido organ in the Pieve Church will feature Jörg Halubek, who will offer an international programme ranging from Bernardo Storace to Johann Sebastian Bach, via William Byrd, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Dietrich Buxtehude and Georg Muffat. Deniel Perer will return to Goima to perform on the splendid organ built by Francesco Merlini in 1780 and recently restored by him, while Ruggero Livieri will play on Agostino de Marco‘s organ, which is equipped almost entirely with wooden pipes and is a unique specimen in the world for its meticulous and precious workmanship. Finally in Dont, on the anonymous organ containing 16th-century phonic material, Giampietro and Lorenzo Rosato will perform a violin and organ duo.
To conclude, the Festival will return to Pieve with the Odhecaton vocal ensemble, directed by Paolo Da Col, who will present some splendid pages from the musical production of the famous Ferrara composer and organist Girolamo Frescobaldi, including the Messa sopra l’Aria della Monica.
Special thanks go to the Municipality of Val di Zoldo, the Cariverona Foundation, and the Chamber of Commerce of Treviso – Belluno|Dolomites for supporting the Festival. Thanks also to the parishes of Val di Zoldo for their kind hospitality, and to all the public and private institutions and local businesses that collaborated and supported the Festival.
The Chamber of Commerce of Treviso – Belluno|Dolomites is committed to supporting cultural events that aim to create knowledge and awareness, capable of fostering relations between society, the economy and the environment while aiming at the growth of the individual, with significant economic resources and with the intention of guaranteeing great collaboration. Quality music, contextualised in the territory, such as the events of Arte e Musica tra Pelmo e Civetta International Festival of Ancient Music in Val di Zoldo, is the expression of this holistic intent that aims to integrate the different dimensions of the person and the economy, in a global vision that will certainly help us to have new opportunities to interpret the challenges that the future proposes to us.
Mario Pozza
President Chamber of Commerce Treviso – Belluno|Dolomites
The universal language of music has the power to create unity within our communities, building bridges of dialogue and collaboration in our territories. In an increasingly divided and polarised world, we need to rediscover the values of art and culture to regain cohesion, a sense of harmony and orientation. It is with this conviction that, as a Foundation, we have decided to support a new edition of the Festival Arte e Musica tra Pelmo e Civetta. The many concerts in the programme will offer precious opportunities to meet in places that have marked the history of Val di Zoldo and will transform the area into an open-air sounding board for great musicians and young talents. Initiatives such as these invite each one of us to search with commitment for beauty, in all its forms: we are convinced that from these immersive artistic and musical experiences, ideas, projects and actions capable of building a new future, for the common good of our territories, can find impetus.
Cariverona Foundation
Once again this year, the municipal administration of Val di Zoldo is delighted to host, support and patronise the Art and Music between Pelmo and Civetta festival, now in its seventh edition. The festival, organised by Antiqua Vox with the financial support of the municipality, is by now an unmissable appointment of the summer; an opportunity to enjoy refined concerts and to appreciate and get to know the art treasures of the churches in the valley kindly made available by our parish priest. Dont, Fornesighe, Goima and others, each with a charm that can make organ concerts special, and not only. The synergy that has developed over these years has opened up unimaginable perspectives and opportunities, as well as involving people who are attached to the valley and in love with its great historical and cultural value.
