Lazio first in absolute value (+5 thousand), Campania first in terms of variation (+7%). The boom in the building industry is driving the balance of enterprises: +22 thousand in the third quarter
of 2021. Strong growth also in services, but Covid continues to weigh on the vitality of the system
Rome, 2 November 2021 – The third quarter of the year closed with another positive sign at the companies register: thanks in part to the impact of bonuses and super-bonuses in the
construction sector, which in the last two years has seen the number of companies grow by almost 30,000, 6,000 of which in the July-September quarter alone – the balance between openings and
closures in the third quarter of 2021 stood at over 20,000 companies (22,258 to be precise), a threshold that has been exceeded. 258), a threshold exceeded only twice in the summer quarters of the
pre-pandemic decade.
The vitality of the entrepreneurial system in the recently concluded quarter was boosted by the construction industry, which, with 6,200 more companies (+0.95% compared to the end of June),
contributed 28% to the positive balance for the period.
The positive trend in the balance is, however, reflected in the continuing slowdown in business closures, as indicated by Covid: a total of 40,133 business closures were recorded between July and
September, the lowest figure in the series for the last ten years. The steady number of registrations (62,391), however, has allowed to record at the end of September a balance of 22,258 companies
more than at the end of June, bringing the stock of companies to reach the value of 6,166,416 units.
This is what emerges from the quarterly Movimprese analysis, conducted by Unioncamere and InfoCamere, on data from the Register of Companies of the Chambers of Commerce.
The driving role of construction for the resilience of the entrepreneurial fabric – alongside that of services, an essential component in responding to the pandemic emergency – can be distinctly
felt by observing the trend in the quarterly growth rate by macro-sector at the turn of the last two years. Between September 2019 and September 2021, the construction sector grew by a total of
29,136 units (+3.5%), second only to the expansion of services to businesses and individuals (83 thousand more businesses for an overall growth, in the two-year period, of 4.2%).
At a territorial level, the dynamics of construction are strongest in Campania, where the cumulative growth in the number of enterprises over the last two years was 7% (corresponding to 4,907 more
enterprises). In absolute terms, the highest increase is in Lazio, which, with a balance of 5,103 units over the two years, has recorded a cumulative growth of 5.8%. Still in percentage terms,
three regions in the south of Italy rank after Campania and Lazio: Sicily (+5.3%), Apulia (+4.8%) and Sardinia (4%).One of the significant elements in the growth of the construction sector comes
from the organisational structure chosen by the new companies. In fact, 70% of the balance over the two years (20,504 units) is made up of joint stock companies, for a growth of 8.5% over the
period. Partnerships (-4,174) and cooperatives (-163) have decreased, while the contribution of individual entrepreneurs remains positive (+12,969 units).
