The number of craft enterprises is growing again. Between January and September, the balance between registrations and terminations of activity in the sector was almost 9 thousand more companies,
equal to a growth rate of 0.67% compared to the end of 2020, bringing the balance back to positive territory after a long period of contraction and then slow recovery. As a result of this
progression, the sector’s perimeter at 30 September stood at 1,295,221 thousand.
This is what emerges from the Movimprese analysis, conducted by Unioncamere and InfoCamere, on data from the Register of Companies of the Chambers of Commerce.
The economic recovery is driving the upturn in the artisan sector, an important sector of the national economy,- underlines the president of Unioncamere, Andrea Prete. – This means
that there is a renewed optimism among Italians, a desire to ‘do’ by setting up their own business, which I hope will continue in the coming months.
At the basis of the expansion of the craft sector there is the strong recovery of the Construction sector (+8,795 units in the period, for a growth of 1.80%) and the dynamism of business
support services (+1,287 companies for an increase of 2.29% in the nine months considered). Not all sectors, however, seem to have felt the effects of the current economic recovery.
Significant reductions in absolute value were recorded in Transport and storage (-930 craft enterprises, equal to a variation of -1.16%), and, above all, in Manufacturing (-2,008
enterprises, equal to -0.70%).
The geography of the craft sector gained ground especially in Lombardy, the leading region in terms of absolute growth, with a balance of 1,770 more craft businesses in the nine
months (+0.73%). Next in the regional ranking, all with an increase of over 1,000 enterprises, are Piedmont (+1,192 and +1.04% in relative terms), Lazio (1,066 and +1.11%) and
Campania (+1,009 and +1.45%). In terms of dynamism, it is Valle d’Aosta (+2.58% corresponding to 91 more companies) that has the strongest drive.
Immediately after comes Trentino Alto-Adige (+1.81% and 473 more companies), Sardinia (+1.55% and 537 more units) and the already mentioned Campania. There were four regions – all
neighbouring – in which the first nine months of 2021 coincided with a reduction in craft enterprises. In order of absolute values, the phenomenon occurred in Marche (-431 units, equal to
-0.99%), Abruzzo (-148 and -0.51%), Molise (-42 and – 0.66%) and Umbria (-35 and – 0.17%).
