Valter Malosti’s direction of Goldoni’s comedy noir finally live
On 9 December, the national premiere at the Teatro Goldoni in Venice kicks off the tour of the major Italian theatres.
Venice, 6 December 2021 – After the success of the streaming in December 2020, the new adaptation of Goldoni’s comedy I due gemelli veneziani proposed by director Valter
Malosti and co-produced by Teatro Stabile del Veneto, Teatro Piemonte Europa, Teatro Metastasio di Prato and ERT/Teatro Nazionale, finally goes on stage live. On Thursday 9
December, with the national premiere at the Teatro Goldoni in Venice, where the show will remain until Sunday 12, the tour of the show on the great Italian stages begins: after Venice it
will be on stage at the Metastasio in Prato (16>19 December) and at the Teatro Astra in Turin (21>23 and 28>31 December) to move then to Trento at the Teatro Sociale
for the beginning of the new year (12>16 January 2022). After Trento, in January, it will be the turn of the Teatro Verdi in Padua and the Teatro Sociale in Brescia, while
February will bring the show back to Veneto, to the Toniolo in Mestre and the Mario Del Monaco in Treviso, before ending the tour at the Teatro Ermanno Fabbri in Vignola, the Arena
del Sole in Bologna and the Teatro Storchi in Modena.
I due gemelli veneziani (The Venetian Twins) represents Malosti’s first encounter with Carlo Goldoni, in what the director defines as – a work backwards through the authors
fundamental in the construction of an Italian language for the stage: Giovanni Testori, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Roberto Longhi, Federico Fellini, Patrizia Valduga, Antonio
Tarantino, three years ago the first Pirandellian challenge and now Goldoni.
The Goldonian comedy adapted by Angela Demattè and Valter Malosti therefore had a virtual debut. After an initial postponement due to the pandemic from spring 2020 to December of the same
year, the streaming transmission on the digital platform Backstage of the Stabile del Veneto was a great success with the public, who will now finally have the opportunity to see the show in the
theatre.
I due gemelli veneziani is a work that embodies all the strength and subversive grace typical of the actors of the Commedia dell’Arte, in which masterful technique is combined with
improvisation, multiple roles, the mask, the use of the body, rhythm and the ability to change countless vocal registers. A rare ability that Malosti encourages in the actors, placing his direction
along the thin ridge that separates tradition from experimentation, and restoring to them the vitality of the stage, at a time when the live performance sector is largely at a standstill.
The show is a machine of fun with a plot made up of duels, love, escapes and rediscoveries, in which the expedient of identical but characteristically opposite twins stands out. At the same
time, this play is also a black farce, subversive, disturbing, about family, identity, love (also brutal, violently erotic, incestuous) and death, which in the hands of Valter Malosti reveals new
perspectives and windows on contemporaneity. The characters do not know how to read or keep in check their emotions and feelings and this alternately provokes laughter and makes them come close to
tragedy or makes them sink into it like Zanetto and Pancrazio.
Among the performers are Marco Foschi in the double role of the twins Zanetto and Tonino, Danilo Nigrelli (Pancrazio), Marco Manchisi (Arlecchino / Pulcinella), Irene Petris (Beatrice),
Alessandro Bressanello (Il Dottor Balanzoni, avvocato in Verona / Tiburzio, orefice), Anna Gamba (Rosaura, believed to be the Doctor’s daughter), Valerio Mazzucato (Brighella, servant in the
Doctor’s house / Bargello), Camilla Nigro (Colombina, servant in the Doctor’s house), Vittorio Camarota (Florindo, Tonino’s friend), Andrea Bellacicco (Lelio, sliced knight / Facchino). Sets and
lights are by Nicolas Bovey, the sound project is by G.U.P. Alcaro and the costumes by Gianluca Sbicca.
