Brussels, 6th May 2021 – The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of joint control over Honshu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (‘Honshu Chemical’)
by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (‘Mitsui Bussan’), all of Japan. Both Honshu Chemical and Mitsui Chemicals are engaged in the production and sale of chemical products. Mitsui
Bussan is a global trading organisation which is active in various sectors, including, inter alia, the sale of chemical products.
The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns in view of the absence of horizontal overlaps and the existence of only limited vertical links between
the activities of the companies involved. The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure.
