Zaia: Extraordinary route, ready to become a classic in Europe.

Montedoro: One of the most ambitious projects of our World Heritage Hills

Vidor (Treviso), 8 July 2023 – We are inaugurating an extraordinary route that combines an exceptional environment, in terms of nature and landscape, with great wine culture. Visitors will really be able to immerse themselves in an area where hospitality is a must and wine and food products have become iconic throughout the world, starting with Prosecco. This land, after the UNESCO recognition, is experiencing a golden period, with tourist flows constantly growing. Now, with this new proposal, our beloved Hills will be even more open to the world of trekking, outdoor, and biking enthusiasts, and to those who wish to enjoy sporting experiences in contact with nature and under the banner of sustainability. The Walk of the Hills will be able to become one of the musts in Europe for attractiveness.

With these words, Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto Region, inaugurated the new Cammino delle Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene (Prosecco Hills Walk) in front of the authorities, press and citizens, in Vidor, the municipality where the route starts.

There are in fact four stages planned for the Walk, which stretches from Vidor to Vittorio Veneto. A journey that develops along the crest of the hills, offering incomparable views. In addition to the places of departure and arrival, the itinerary touches on Colbertaldo, the southern heights of Valdobbiadene, Col San Martino, the Vedette of Farra di Soligo, Premaor di Miane, the Tre Ponti di Follina, the Cison area with Zuel di Qua e di Là, Arfanta, Tarzo, Nogarolo and Serravalle. In the total 51 km, the hiker will stroll through the beauty of the Treviso pre-alpine area: from steep slopes to gentle walks through fields, from water-rich valleys to sharp ridges. There will be no shortage of cultural sites, stemming from centuries of history in an area rich in villages, castles, abbeys, churches and a great deal of popular tradition.

After three years of intense work, today we are truly proud to inaugurate one of the most ambitious projects of the UNESCO Site of the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, which yesterday celebrated four years since it was declared a World Heritage Site in Baku in 2019, commented Marina Montedoro, President of the Association for the Heritage of the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The goal we have always set ourselves to enhance and safeguard this heritage is to develop a slow and sustainable tourism that can truly immerse itself in the territory it passes through, discovering its nature, history, culture, art, traditions and food and wine. The Cammino is a perfect synthesis of these objectives and we know that, given also the trend that the Cammini in Italy are having, it will be able to attract a quality public, attentive and respectful of nature, both Italian and foreign. Perfectly signposted, equipped with maps and apps to walk it, as well as a professional cartography published by Tabacco, the Cammino is within reach of all those who want to experience a slow journey, in a landscape considered a world wonder. Many thanks are due for today’s milestone, which is in fact only a beginning: Governor Luca Zaia, who has always urged us to ideally unite the west and east of the Hills with a pedestrian route, Giovanni Carraro, the greatest expert in the field and author of the route, the municipal administrations, all the volunteers, the Alpini and CAI groups involved, but also the private citizens who have welcomed the Cammino as an opportunity for their wonderful territory.

Many of the sites visited by the Walk also bring back memories of the Great War, thanks to the numerous trenches, tunnels and military posts visible on the hills that are symbolically linked to the movement made by the Italian troops when they managed to cross the Piave River to fight the final battle of Vittorio Veneto (24 October – 4 November 1918).

Finally, Giovanni Carraro comments, we are at the conclusion of a great work that has seen the creation of 40 walking itineraries in the 29 municipalities of the World Heritage areas. 405 km of trails to be offered to the public of walkers in the pre-alpine area, together with dozens of cultural curiosities that are summarised by two new maps, the new book and the new section of the website from which to download GPS tracks and much more information. The jewel in the crown of the project is definitely the Cammino delle Colline del Prosecco (Prosecco Hills Walk), which allows visitors to get a close-up view of the extraordinary nature of this World Heritage area, unique in the world. I trust that walkers from all over the world will be able to experience the same emotions that I have felt in these years of testing and research.

The route, which is completely marked with vertical signs, is designed to visit the entire geological block characterised by the hogback of sub-prealpine hills that link up with each other in the Core Zone. It presents an average technical difficulty of a hiking type, with an altimetry of 2265 m of positive height difference. Some sections are more demanding, such as the final part of Monte Comun and Monte Baldo, classified EE, and for this reason an optional northern variant has been planned that bypasses this segment via an easier route through Fratta, Colmaggiore and the southern part of Revine, thus offering solutions suitable for all hikers and classified E.

All information and tracks for walking the route, which has also been mapped out and is visible on Google Maps, can be found in the dedicated section of the website www.collineconeglianovaldobbiadene.it . On the website it is also possible to download the credential of the route, which walkers can have stamped in the shops in the villages crossed. A dedicated Tabacco map is also available, which contains, in addition to the route, all the other more than 40 trails to walk in the World Heritage area.

Finally, thanks to the new Prosecco Hills Link project, the intermodal solution born from the synergy between Trenitalia and MOM with the collaboration of the Association Patrimonio Colline Conegliano Valdobbiadene and of the Consortium Tutela Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Vidor, the starting point of the Walk, will be reachable by bus (Saturday and Sunday), with a stop just a few metres from the start.
