THE CRIME OF VIA DELL’ORSINA
L’Affaire de la rue de Lourcine
The paradoxical story written by the French playwright Eugène Marin Labiche now on stage directed by Andrée Ruth Shammah with Massimo Dapporto and Antonello Fassari.
Il delitto di via dell’Orsina, a classic French vaudeville play written by the playwright Eugène Marin Labiche and performed throughout Europe between the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries, will light up the stage of the Teatro Mario Del Monaco in Treviso from 14 to 16 January in the new version directed by Andrée Ruth Shammah and performed by two
actors known to the general public as Massimo Dapporto and Antonello Fassari.
The plot of the show
A man wakes up and finds a stranger in his bed, both are very thirsty, their hands are dirty and their pockets are full of coal, but they don’t know why, they don’t remember anything of the
previous night. Slowly the two try to reconstruct what happened, but the only thing they are certain of is that they were both at a high school alumni party. They know nothing about what happened
when they left the gathering. They learn from a newspaper that a young charcoal burner died that night and, amidst a series of misunderstandings and misconceptions, the possibility arises that the
two of them committed that heinous murder.
After the performances in Treviso, in April, from 12 to 14, the show will also be in Venice at the Teatro Goldoni.
Director’s notes
The original text, rarely seen on our stages, is the classic French vaudeville, so popular in the nineteenth century. A light-hearted story, certainly, but well thought out in order to reflect
on various questions: how far are we willing to go to protect our honour?
Between a cantata and a play on words, the bitter truth is that the shadow of the human soul could drive us to the darkest evil. But fortunately we are in vaudeville, so good always triumphs
thanks to chance and a big laugh solves everything.
The play tells of a paradoxical situation, a bit Beckettian, brilliantly constructed by a giant of dramaturgy such as Eugène Marin Labiche. It is no coincidence that this text was chosen by
directors such as Patrice Chereau, who staged it in 1966 in France, and by Klaus Michael Grüber in Germany.
As soon as I read it, I thought it would be a great challenge, an opportunity for a surprising direction.
Thinking about these two characters, profoundly different from each other: one rich, noble, elegant and the other rough, vulgar, proletarian, who have to confront what they believe they have
done, I immediately thought of Massimo Dapporto and Antonello Fassari, a pairing I have never had the opportunity to work with – and who have never worked together – but who I believe are perfect
to bring this story to life.
I see it as a gamble, as the possibility of creating a light and amusing but at the same time profound show; a reflection on the absurdity and absurdity of life.
