A new and significant result has been achieved by the Film Market of the Venice International Film Fest, and in particular by the European Gap Financing
Market project, organized by the Biennale di Veneziaand co-financed by the Creative Europe –
Media
programme of the European Union.
The film Letters from War (Cartas da guerra) by Portuguese director Ivo M. Ferreira, which was completed thanks to the European Gap Financing
Market of the Venice Film Festival 2015, was selected to screen in Competition at the Berlin Film Festival 2016, where it will be shown
on Sunday February 14th.
In the past, the film Vergine giurata by Laura Bispuri also bridged the gap in its budget at the Venice Film Market 2014 and was then selected to screen
in Competition, the only Italian film in the selection, at the Berlin Film Festival 2015, subsequently taking awards at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, in San Francisco and in Hong Kong.
The European Gap-Financing Market is one of the projects initiated by the Venice Film Market at the Venice International Film Festival,
directed byAlberto Barbera and organized by the Biennale chaired by Paolo Baratta.
The European Gap-Financing Market is a co-production market, which presents 15 European projects that have already secured at least 70% of their funding. Meetings
are organized in Venice between the producers of the selected projects and international investors, with the purpose of completing the budget and making the films.
Letters from War (Cartas da guerra) by Ivo. M. Ferreira is produced by “O Som e a Fùria” from Lisbon. It is based on letters written in 1971 from Angola,
during the Portuguese colonial war, by the young military doctor Antònio Lobo Antunes to his pregnant wife, and gathered in 2005 into the book entitled This Life Here Described on This Piece of
Paper.
Director Ivo M. Ferreiro (Lisbon, 1975) made his debut with documentary films about Asia (Macao) and Angola. In 2009 he made his first feature-length fiction film, Aguas Mil,
presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival. He currently lives in Macao.
