The update to 2023 of the annual waste management cost indices with reference base 2015=100 is published.
The waste management cost indices refer to waste collection, treatment and disposal activities and material recovery (division 38 of Ateco 2007). They are calculated using the Laspeyres formulation and fixed weighting system, referring to the year 2015.
These indices measure the development of the production costs of waste management activities over time, with reference to the purchase of goods and services, the cost of employees and the cost of capital use.
Between 2022 and 2023, the waste management cost index shows a growth of 1.5%, which is the result of increases in the price of the purchase of goods and services (+1.2%), personnel costs (+1.5%) and the cost of capital use (+3.1%).
Compared to the two economic subsectors that make up the total index, the +1.5% change in costs in 2023 is due to +1.5% in the waste collection, treatment and disposal sector and +1.7% in the material recovery sector.
The series from 2010 to 2023 of the index levels in base 2015=100, total and detailed by cost components and by economic sub-sector, are available in the Statistical Appendix attached to this Information Note.
The production of these indices is not currently provided for by EU statistical regulations nor by the National Statistical Plan, but is aimed at meeting the sector’s knowledge needs. Please refer to the methodological note for further clarification.
