Agri-food protection: 120,000 inspections in the first half of 2023. Lollobrigida: “Steering committee strengthens coordination”

Approximately 120 thousand inspections for the protection of agri-foodstuffs and 1,846 seizures, for 10 million kilos of products and a total value of over 38 million euro. These are the main operational results of the activities carried out in the first half of 2023 by the control bodies of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry.

There were 247 reports of offences and 5,600 administrative charges. The activities mainly concerned the following areas: wine (30%), olive oil (13%), technical means (11%), dairy (10%), animal husbandry (8%) and fruit and vegetables (7%).

The data were presented by the Steering Committee for controls to protect the agri-food sector, set up in March on the initiative of Minister Lollobrigida, and comprising the Icqrf, the Carabinieri Commands for the Protection of Agri-foodstuffs and for the Protection of Forests and Parks, the Guardia di Finanza (Finance Police), the Port Authority-Coast Guard, the Agea (Italian Agency for Agriculture and Forestry) and the Customs Agency.

The steering committee strengthens strategic coordination and this is one of the elements that can make the control machine more efficient, enabling it to exchange information, investigate critical issues and make available news, knowledge and skills, to intervene where there is fraud but above all to prevent it, putting Italian companies in a position to grow and develop their best potential.

The sector needs protection, defence, a guarantee against mafia infiltration, a guarantee within the State. Legality is an inescapable pillar. It is no coincidence that we asked to organise this event today, because it is a symbolic day in the fight against crime represented by the death of Paolo Borsellino, – the minister stressed.
