The European Commission has decided today to transfer in the interest of the service Michelle Sutton to the function of Data Protection Officer (DPO) in the Secretariat-General (SG). The Data Protection Officer ensures, in an independent way, that the Commission correctly applies the law protecting individuals’ personal data and keeps a public register of all operations carried out by the Commission involving personal data. The date of effect is 1 July 2023.
Michelle Sutton, a Belgian and British national, will draw on her expertise in corporate governance and institutional issues, as well as her extensive policy experience gained over 20 years in the European Commission.
As Principal Adviser in the Internal Audit Service and as senior expert in the Secretariat-General, she has provided strategic analysis and policy development advice in the areas of corporate governance, audit and performance, and coordinated COVID-19 emergency support funding. Earlier in her career, she led the response to the financial crisis as Member of Cabinet of President Barroso. She was Member of Cabinet of Competition Commissioner Kroes and later served as Deputy Head of Cabinet to First Vice-President Timmermans, where she led on interinstitutional, justice and home affairs and fundamental rights issues, including data protection.
