The European Commission and UEFA last night launched a new TV ad – ‘Become a fan of energy saving
too‘ – that premiered during the evening’s Champions League matches. The ad will be broadcast across the EU and further afield, and will potentially reach over 35 million football fans
per match in the EU alone. Football fans will see it during the men’s and women’s UEFA Champions League, the Europa League and other major competitions. The video will also be shown in stadia
during the matches, and pitchside ads will promote the European Green Deal. Earlier this month, the Commission renewed its long-standing partnership with UEFA, charting a roadmap for joint efforts
until 2025 to harness football as a force for positive change across Europe. The cooperation will continue to focus on key EU priorities, such as climate action, equality for all and social
inclusion. Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, said: ‘Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked an energy crisis felt in Europe and around
the world. The next few winters will be tough, but we have what it takes to rise to this challenge. Simple steps like the ones we see in the video can make a big change, if we all turn down our
heating by 1 degree Celsius we can save 10 billion cubic metres of gas. Energy savings are also hugely important in our fight against the climate crisis. In the end it needs a team effort: if
everyone contributes, we will get through the next winters and be ready for a greener future. Saving energy is a great tactic: bad for Putin, good for the climate.’ More details about this
partnership are available on the Commission’s website.
