The European Commission appoints a new Director for its Directorate-General for Environment.

Daily News 10 / 01/ 2024  Today, the European Commission has appointed Claudia Fusco as Director ‘General Affairs, Knowledge and Resources’ at the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV). The role of DG ENV is to protect, preserve and improve the environment for present and future generations and to promote a sustainable and resource efficient economy through embracing circularity within and beyond Europe’s borders. The date of effect will be determined later.

Having served the Commission for over two decades, Ms Fusco has acquired deep knowledge of a variety of EU policy areas, including competition, transport, internal market, environment, and energy. Her experience includes among others the handling of state aid cases in the transport sector and the development of aviation security legislation, together with the coordination of infringement procedure in the electricity and gas field. She has also extensive knowledge of the promotion of small and medium-size enterprises policy, the development of a circular economy and the protection of the environment. She honed her coordination and leadership skills while being assistant to the Director-General of the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) and DG ENV.

Claudia Fusco, an Italian national, is currently Head of Unit ‘Green knowledge and Research Hub, LIFE’ in DG ENV, where she ensures that environmental policies are supported by sound and up-to-date scientific knowledge through Horizon Europe and steer the development and implementation of the LIFE programme. Previously, she was Head of Unit for ‘Environmental knowledge, SMEs and Eco-innovation’ in DG ENV for five years. Before joining the Commission in 2001, she worked as a Customs official. Ms Fusco holds a PhD in Public Finance.
