Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, is today closing the EU Youth Conference organised by the Slovenian Presidency in Maribor, Slovenia. Commissioner Gabriel said: - Our message to young people is simple. We want you to have your say on the EU issues that matter to you. And we are ready to invest in your right to shape your future – your right to participate on your own terms. We will keep working to ensure full participation of young people in society and the Year of European Youth 2022 will be key in this regard.
The aim of this EU Youth Conference is to look back at the 8th cycle of the Youth Dialogue focussed on ‘Space for Democracy and Participation’, and deliver final recommendations from EU youth and Member States to promote an increased participation of young people at all levels (local, regional, national and European). Around 200 young people from the EU, youth delegates, NGOs, researchers and policymakers have participated in this conference, which started on 26 September and ends today, on 30 September.
Conference recommendations will be presented by ministers and representatives of Member States covering youth issues at the Council of Ministers in November 2021. The Commission runs several programmes targeting and involving young people, from Erasmus+ to the European Solidarity Corps.
President von der Leyen, in her 2021 State of the Union address, has proposed to make 2022 the Year of European Youth to raise awareness on EU actions for young people and to further empower young Europeans.
