Fondazione Cortina 2021 has obtained ISO 20121:2012 certification released by the accredited third party certification body DNV GL for the sustainable management of the Ski World Cup Finals from 18th to 22nd March 2020 and the Alpine World Ski Championships that will be held in Cortina d’Ampezzo from 8th to 21st February 2021.

The World Ski Championships will take place in the Dolomites, UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a global event born in compliance with the responsibility towards the environment, the local community that hosts the event and the future generations. It is a project focused on the future that aims to achieve the highest level of sustainability in order to minimize the environmental impact.
During the fourteen-day event, ski champions coming from 70 countries will compete for the 13 titles: Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom, Alpine Combine, Alpine Team Event, Slalom and, for the first time, Parallel Slalom.

The implementation of this sustainable event management system was pioneered by the Olympic Games London 2012 and the Milan Expo 2015. This proves that sustainability is increasingly playing an important role in the management processes of large-scale events. Fondazione Cortina 2021 has been working towards the implementation of the ISO 20121 standard with the goal of ensuring more consistent sustainability efforts at all stages of the Games, from the preparation phase up until after the Games have ended.

The measures adopted in order to ensure high standards in terms of sustainability include works regarding the finish area and road bypasses, choice of the suppliers, waste separation, snow-making and preparation of the slopes for the competitions and environmental and social communication aimed at the media and the general public.

Sustainability and responsibility towards the environment are the driving forces orienting the projects and the activities of Fondazione Cortina 2021, these principles will be applied with the aim to be sustainable in the long term and leave a positive legacy -said Valerio Giacobbi, CEO at Fondazione Cortina 2021.
Cortina 2021 is an important occasion to gather experiences, work on the right sustainability practices and impart all this to the events of the near future. Fondazione Cortina 2021 is proud to work with public institutions, local associations and partners who share the same values in terms of environmental sustainability, a key principle applied in the planning and organization of this event -said Stefano Crea, Regional Manager Southern Europe & Africa, di DNV GL – Business Assurance.
