The Titian by Marco Boschini
Museum of the Cenedese – Vittorio Veneto
The conference will deal with the research conducted by Rebecca Civettini who has analyzed the multifaceted world of Marco Boschini (1602-1681), a central figure in the artistic and cultural Venice of the seventeenth century.
Located at the intersection of art and commerce, Boschini forged significant connections with the nobility and merchant class, gaining access to important art collections and a deep understanding of the art market. Although his training included painting and engraving, his most significant contributions are found in his writings, including La Carta del navegar pitoresco (1660) and Le Minere della pittura (1664). A central focus of the research is Boschini’s critical assessment of Venetian masters, in particular Titian, whom he celebrates as a “pilot”; for future generations. Through textual analysis and translations from the Venetian dialect, the research highlights the consistency of Boschini’s judgment on Titian and provides insights into the techniques of other artists such as Giorgione and Veronese. His works also document the reception and preservation of art in the 17th century. In conclusion, the research shows how Boschini’s activities as a merchant, artist and writer were fundamental in shaping the artistic discourse in Venice, offering new perspectives on a complex and fascinating period.
Rebecca Civettini, born in Brescia, holds a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Heritage from the University of Verona. Deepens knowledge in the field of diagnostics applied to art history, dedicating his thesis to studies on Titian’s works conducted by the restoration laboratory of the National Gallery in London, with a particular focus on the works that Maestro Cadorino made for Alfonso I d’Este’s Camerino d’Alabastro. His academic career continued with the master’s degree, obtained in 2025, also at the University of Verona. The master’s thesis focused on the reception of the figure and models of Titian in seventeenth-century Venice, a theme that he addressed through the analysis of the writings of Marco Boschini. This work allowed her to delve into the field of artistic literature, taking as a starting point the translation into Italian language of passages relating to Titian in Boschini’s Carta del navegar pitoresco (1660). In parallel to his studies, since 2022 he has been collaborating with Palazzo Maffei Fondazione Carlon.
