Visnà di Vazzola, 29 November 2023 – «23 years of life, mine too». This was the leitmotif that accompanied, last night, the eagerly awaited opening of the first bottle of “Castagner Riserva 23 anni”. About one hundred guests present experienced the emotion of tasting, for the first time, a piece of the company’s history among the stills of the Vazzola Distillery. A tribute to the entrepreneurial journey, accomplished over the years, of a distillation champion like Roberto Castagner.
Produced in just 749 examples, ‘Castagner Riserva 23 anni’ is the fruit of the vision of Roberto Castagner, who in 23 years has pampered it like a child, tasting it month by month and following its evolution. Beautiful things must be shared – said Castagner – In here is the 1999 vintage. Merlot, Cabernet and Pinot Noir, 3 different grape varieties that have lived these 23 years apart and then joined together to create a unique blend, but I’ll stop here because I can’t tell the story. Fathers cannot tell the tale of their sons.
23 years ago, Roberto had already thought of this project – explained the President of the Fondazione Italiana Sommelier del Veneto, Raul D’Alessandro – because he had the foresight and courage to wait. Brilliant, with amber and topaz nuances, ‘Castagner Riserva 23 anni’ is kaleidoscopic on the nose. An overture of aromas played between notes of sultanas, apricot and dried orange, sweet tones of vanilla, almond and egg white. The dark part is counterbalanced by nuances of carob, walnut husk and a balsamic hint. Enveloping in the mouth, very long finish with precise olfactory returns. Interminable‘.
Present at the event, in addition to the most important customers, were many entrepreneurs and members of the Rotary Club of Conegliano. The writer Francesco Vidotto, who in his latest book, ‘To each his own God’, recounts his incredible story of rebirth, led a talk on literature. The evening began with a visit to the distillery, continued with a dinner of traditional Veneto spit and ended with a tasting of ‘Castagner Riserva 23 anni’ accompanied by the excellent Fabris panettone.
