The history of the Piave District in medieval times is certainly marked by the presence of monasteries and abbeys. One of the most suggestive abbeys of the Marca Trevigiana is undoubtedly that of the Da Vidor family: the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Bona in Vidor dates back to the eleventh century, was founded by the counts of Vidor Giovanni Gravone and his son Wolfaro.
Hidden among the vineyards of Prosecco Superiore Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, since 2019 it is part of the UNESCO world heritage.
It is located in an economic-strategic position of control of the fords of the Piave, in fact the ferry service was granted by the benedictine monastery of Santa Maria di Vidor which had full jurisdiction and to which any duties on the transport of goods the many merchants who used the boatman.
It represents an oasis of pure economic resilience: the monks introduced innovative techniques to make the land more productive and transformed the monastery into an economic power capable of giving support and help to individuals and support to the whole community, in case of natural disasters, famines and epidemics.
And this is perhaps one of the added values of this beautiful abbey, because if not enough the Church, simple and sober from the Roman plant, the square plan Cloister, the chapel containing the relics of the Egyptian Santa Bona and a fresco of San Cristoforo, patron of the ferry drivers. Just facing, you can enjoy the view of the river Piave.
The Abbey is open in March during the celebrations of Saint Joseph, patron of Vidor and in September on the occasion of the festivities of September Vidorese.
