Holidays in the mountains. New ideas and suggestions for your stay Dosoledo

Section: Exclusive news for your mountain vacations

This news item is part of the section dedicated to villages and mountain resorts in the Belluno Dolomites area. Each entry presents a village and offers some useful ideas for your mountain vacations, with a slow, authentic, and sustainable approach.

Val Comelico

Val Comelico is an alpine valley located in the far northeast of the province of Belluno, on the border with Austria. It is part of the UNESCO Dolomites, in the heart of one of the most authentic landscapes in Veneto. It is a land with a strong identity, where the value of hospitality and craft traditions—including the ancient art of wood carving—remain alive and recognizable.

The valley is divided into five distinct municipalities (Comelico Superiore, San Nicolò di Comelico, Danta di Cadore, San Pietro di Cadore, and Santo Stefano di Cadore). In particular, the municipality of Comelico Superiore includes the charming hamlets of Padola, Candide, Casamazzagno, and Dosoledo.

Val Comelico is the ideal destination for those seeking a vacation characterized by slow living, unspoiled nature, and respect for the land, with the possibility of easily crossing borders to enjoy an even broader alpine experience.

DOSOLEDO: the village and its cultural identity

For the section “Exclusive news for your mountain holidays” we begin our journey through the most evocative villages in the area with Dosoledo!

The village welcomes you with a genuine atmosphere, made up of historic architecture, silence, open landscapes, and a slow pace that invites you to rediscover the authentic essence of the valley. Here, Ladin tradition is part of everyday life: you can breathe it in the alleys, barns, woods, and community institutions that have regulated the relationship between inhabitants and the territory for centuries.

Architecture, Regola, and Ladin identity

Dosoledo preserves a unique architectural heritage: ancient wooden tabià, brick houses built after repeated fires in the 19th century, quiet alleys, and open views of the Dolomites. At the heart of the local identity is the Regola, the ancient community institution that still today manages the shared use of forests, pastures, and resources. It is thanks to the Regola that traditions, place names, rituals, and ways of life have been handed down intact to this day, helping to preserve a recognizable and authentic cultural landscape.

The Barn Trail and the heritage of Rifabbrico

The eleven historic barns, strategically located outside the town center to protect it from fires, make up the charming Barn Trail, enriched with period photographs and a narrative that recounts rural life. During the summer, some tabià host exhibitions, cultural events, and initiatives related to the memory of the village.

The Trói of Dosoledo: themed trails through nature and memory

The Trói are the ancient trails of Comelico, restored in recent years thanks to the Algudnei project of the Comelico Superiore Cultural Research Group, with the support of the Regola di Dosoledo, to preserve the historical and cultural memory of the valley. These trails connect Dosoledo to the nearby hamlets of Casamazzagno, Candide, and Padola, passing through woods, meadows, and panoramic viewpoints of the Dolomites.

Today, they form four themed trails rich in wooden sculptures by local artists and points of interest:

  • Trói dli Mascri – (Path of Masks) dedicated to Carnival and its symbolic figures.
  • Trói dli Tradizion – (Path of Traditions) recounts the customs, rituals, and festivals of the community.
  • Trói di Bacani – (Farmers’ Trail) explores rural life and work in the fields.
  • Trói di Mestieri – (Crafts Trail) recounts ancient activities such as Clònpar, shoemakers, and carpenters.

These trails, surrounded by nature, are ideal all year round and offer the opportunity to observe how the forest changes with each season, its light and the surrounding landscape.

Culture, traditions, and symbolic places

Immersing yourself in Dosoledo also means discovering a treasure trove of history and art. The community has jealously guarded its Ladin roots, visible in the architecture, works of art, and museums dedicated to the memory of the valley. To explore the cultural heritage, we invite you to:

  • Stroll through the historic villages and observe the typical architecture of Comelico.
  • Visit the Church of Saints Osvaldo and Rocco, with frescoes by local artists (Giovanni del Min and Brustolon).
  • Discover Palazzo Zandonella – Dell’Aquila, an imposing 17th-century building.
  • Visit the Algudnei Museum, housed in the same building: it offers an educational tour dedicated to local history, from Carnival to the historic institution of the Regola, from the Rifabbrico to the Great War, to the history of the Clònpar (tinsmiths) and the Ladin language.

Interesting fact: Algudnei means “something about us” and is the beating heart of cultural research in the valley.

The historic Carnival of Dosoledo

One of the most vibrant traditions is the Masquerade of Santa Plonia, the historic Carnival that enlivens the streets of the village every February with symbolic figures such as Matazin and Laché. A unique experience to understand the soul of Comelico.

For further details, see the section dedicated to Carnival on the Algudnei website.
