Valdobbiadene (TV), Oct. 24, 2023 – Today is an important day in the defense of the identity and value of appellations. After two years of negotiation we enthusiastically welcome, at the conclusion of the trialogue held today in Brussels, the approval of the new proposal for European Union regulation on geographical indications that provides more simplifications and protections. It will ban the use of traditional terms, such as “prosek,” that emulate the geographical indication of other member states, and that generate consumer confusion and encourage the phenomenon of “Italian sounding,” which is as harmful to products as to the territories that produce them. Heartfelt thanks go to Paolo De Castro, rapporteur of the measure and always in the front row in the battle to defend Made in Italy, to the government whose support has been decisive in the battle against “prosek,” and to the three Protection Consortia that, together with the Association, have brought home an extraordinary result. The teamwork that saw us collaborate on the “prosek case” must be our strength in the future as well in defending the interests of the Veneto region.
At the close of the trilogue – informal inter-institutional negotiations bringing together representatives of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission – Marina Montedoro, president of the Association for the Heritage of the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, comments on the new proposal for EU regulation on geographical indications that will not allow the registration of traditional terms, such as “prosek,” that emulate the recognized geographical indications of other member states.
The text of the agreement, concluded today between negotiators from the European Parliament (Paolo De Castro), the Council (Spanish Minister Luis Planas) and the Commission (Commissioner Janusz Wojchechowski), after the drafting work that will be completed in the next few hours, will arrive (probably on October 30) on the table of the Special Committee on Agriculture of the Council, which will have to give the formal green light with a letter of confirmation. The EU Parliament will in turn initiate the formalities for final approval with a single vote of approval of the agreement in the AGRI Committee, probably during the November 27-28 session, and the final green light from the Plenary in early 2024 (between January and February).
