The history of the Quartier del Piave in medieval times is certainly marked by the presence of monasteries and abbeys. One of the most striking in the Marca Trevigiana is undoubtedly that of the Da Vidor family: the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Bona in Vidor dates back to the 11th century and was founded by the Counts of Vidor Giovanni Gravone and his son Wolfaro.
Hidden among the vineyards of Prosecco Superiore Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, from 2019 it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
It is situated in an economic-strategic position controlling the fords of the Piave River, in fact the ferry service was granted by the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria di Vidor, which had full jurisdiction over it and which was responsible for any duties on the transport of the goods of the numerous merchants who used the boatman.
Indeed, it represents an oasis of pure economic resilience: the monks introduced innovative techniques to make the land more productive and transformed the monastery into an economic powerhouse capable of providing support and help to individuals and to the community as a whole, in the event of natural disasters, famines and epidemics.
And this is perhaps one of the added values of this beautiful abbey, for if the simple and sober Roman-style church, the square-plan cloister, the chapel containing the relics of the Egyptian St Bona and a fresco of St Christopher, patron saint of ferrymen, were not enough. Just looking out, you can enjoy the view of the Piave River.
The Abbey is open in March during the celebrations of Saint Joseph, patron saint of Vidor, and in September during the celebrations of September Vidorese.
