Carnival of mountain traditions: masks and costumes from the 1700s

The ‘Consorzio dei Mascherai Alpini

The ‘Consorzio dei Mascherai Alpini’ was established in 2002 on the initiative of a group of sculptors of wooden carnival masks from various locations in north-eastern Italy.
The Consortium subscribes to a manifesto that valorises the Alpine carnival tradition, and in particular the wooden mask.
Every year, in summer, the mask-makers meet in an international sculpture symposium, which is held in rotation in the various Alpine localities where this tradition is still alive.
There are currently 35 participating sculptors (update 2016) from Italy, Austria and Slovenia; the number is constantly increasing. Brief information and a selection of masks can be found on the ‘sculptors’ page of our website.
