We are glad to announce the opening of the new dossier-exhibition Canova and the birth of modern sculpture. The Theseus on the Minotaur, which will be held from March 23rd to June 21st 2025 at the Museum Gypsotheca Antonio Canova di Possagno (Treviso).
Curated by Professor Elena Catra, the exhibition is dedicated to one of the young masterpieces of the Venetian master: Theseus on the Minotaur. The event celebrates the important entry into the collection of the Head of Theseus in plaster, from a private collection and now visible for the first time to the public in the Lazzari Wing.
Through a fascinating exhibition, you will discover the genesis and evolution of this work that marks the transition from Baroque to Neoclassicism. Canova, with his extraordinary artistic vision, depicted Theseus in a moment of reflection after victory, emphasizing moral strength over the impetus of the battle.
The exhibition continues in Antonio Canova’s birthplace, with paintings, engravings, documentation, and rare publications related to the work, including the self-portrait by Gavin Hamilton and the famous etching Theseus on the Minotaur by Salesa Bonaventura and Raffaello Morghen.
We are waiting for you in Possagno with an exhibition that represents a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the art of Canova and understand its fundamental role in the birth of modern sculpture
