THE ANTONIO CANOVA’S GYPSOTHECA AND MUSEUM IN POSSAGNO IS
THE PLACE THAT PRESERVES THE HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC LEGACY
OF THE GREATEST SCULPTOR OF THE NEOCLASSICAL PERIOD.
Antonio Canova
In addition to paying tribute to the great Artist, it is also important to remember the great man who made the History of his time, distinguishing himself in the role of critic and guardian of the arts and active in international diplomacy, bringing to a successful conclusion the task entrusted to him in 1815 by Pope Pius VII for the recovery of goods stolen by Napoleon.
He was also a great entrepreneur, leading a workshop that had a variety of collaborators engaged in the different stages of the creative process followed by Canova to obtain the final marbles, and for this reason he is sometimes called the last of the ancients and the first of the moderns; in addition, the Artist elaborated strategies for the communication and promotion of his works, translating them into engravings and spreading them among European courts.
The Museum
The museum complex, one of the first in the Veneto region, consists of the Birth House and the Gypsotheca, located in the original basilica and the extension designed by Carlo Scarpa, which collects the original plaster models from which the marbles that are now found in the world’s most important museums were translated.
The Birthplace houses the artist’s paintings, drawings, engravings and personal effects.
The Germin Wing, library, garden and brolo are also part of the compendium.
The museum offers visitors numerous experiences: from guided tours and educational workshops, to nighttime candlelight tours.
