Friday 20th October at 6pm concludes, in the Bomben spaces in Treviso, Racconti di paesaggi tra Oriente e Occidente (“Tales of landscapes between East and West“), a cycle of presentations of recently published books, to propose, with their authors, different looks at African, Asian and European geographical and cultural landscapes. Organised by the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche, the review is curated by Patrizia Boschiero and Massimo Rossi, respectively head of publishing and historical geographer at the Fondazione Benetton.

After the appointments with Marco Aime and Maurizio Paolillo, the geographer Luisa Rossi will present the volume La misura del paesaggio. Il viaggio topografico di Pierre-Antoine Clerc, Capitano del Genio napoleonico(1770-1843), published by the Istituto Geografico Militare in 2021.

The result of extensive research in Italian and French archives, the book reconstructs the transition of the depiction of land relief on maps, from the imitative and “picturesque” symbologies typical of the cartographic-artistic language of the Old Regime, to its representation by means of contour lines. A story that has its roots in the Enlightenment of science, arts and crafts and that will only be fully resolved in the late 19th century.
By retracing the thread of the professional and human biography of an obscure Captain of the French Engineers, Pierre-Antoine Clerc, who lived between the Revolution and Restoration, the times and modes of a “topographical novel” emerged, which made reference to theoretical, technical and artistic knowledge, involved military and civil institutions and involved cabinet scientists and men accustomed to treading the most impervious terrain in order to measure it.
Pierre-Antoine Clerc and his brigade, born under the shadow of Napoleon I and within the framework of the Parisian Gallery of Models founded by Louis XIV, guide us on a historical-geographical journey through Liguria, the Isles of Hyères, Mont-Cenis, Cherbourg and beyond the Rhine. Admirably blending art and geometry, they restore the landscapes of these places in an almost unpublished cartographic and vedutistic heritage of great interest.
