Everyone knows that Vittorio Veneto is famous for being one of the protagonists at the final battle of the Great War fought in 1918, however, how many people know that the city of Vittorio Veneto is also the birthplace of the man who put words to Mozart?
Born Emanuele Conegliano in 1763, Lorenzo da Ponte became one of the most significant Italian librettists of his time. Da Ponte spent most of his life living in different cities – Vittorio Veneto, Portogruaro, Venice, Treviso, Gorizia, Dresda, London, Vienna and New York. When he turned up in Vienna he worked for theatre and opera where he developed his talent as court composer and librettist.
The operas The marriage of Figaro, Così fan Tutte and Don Giovanni that he produced together with Mozart and Salieri are among the greatest in the international repertory.
A bust of Lorenzo da Ponte stands in Parco Papadopoli, in Serravalle you will find the theatre dedicated to the artist.
