As a leader in the eyewear industry, Certottica is distinguished by its dedication to sustainability and innovation, contributing significantly to the progress of the optical sector. It also engages in environmental sustainability and innovation projects, collaborating with national and international companies for market surveillance.
Certottica’s areas of expertise focus on: Testing and certification, innovation, standardisation and training.
With regard to innovation: Through its advanced Search & Development programme, it collaborates with companies in the eyewear sector by developing innovative solutions in line with environmental sustainability trends, but it also develops projects where sustainability and valorisation of the historical heritage of the eyewear sector are at the centre.
Current projects include the InterWaste Project, financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy-Austria Programme 2021-2027, which aims to valorise industrial production waste, and the OPTI-RAIL Project, which strives to preserve and valorise two authentic historical treasures in the Dolomiti Live area.

OPTI-RAIL is a project financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy-Austria CLLD Programme Dolomiti Live 2021-2027, which is committed to preserving and enhancing two authentic historical treasures of the Dolomiti Live area, between the Upper Belluno area and the Austrian Osttirol: the historical spectacles of the Spectacle District and the historical diesel locomotive 2043.49. Certottica is leading this initiative in collaboration with the Verein der Eisenbahnfreunde in Lienz, manager of the Lienz Railway Museum. The main objective of the project is to preserve and enhance the historical spectacles of the Spectacle District, which are important artefacts, to ensure their preservation and appreciation by communities and visitors. Certottica is committed to characterising the collections of historic plastic spectacles, assessing their material and level of deterioration in order to initiate maintenance and restoration actions. During the project, workshops and conferences will be organised in the programme area to share results and promote the valorisation of historic spectacles and locomotives. The project will run from February 2024 to February 2026.

InterWaste is an initiative led by Certottica together with Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH (Austria) and Elite Ambiente srl, which aims to give a second life to waste from the eyewear, furniture and wood industries. Through this project, multiple applications are being explored to transform waste such as spent wood and ceramic paste used in the frame tumbling phase, currently destined for landfills or incinerators, into secondary raw materials for the furniture and eyewear industry. During the project, a Life Cycle Assessment will be carried out to assess the environmental impact of new products. InterWaste will not only generate opportunities and a circular business in the regions involved, but will also contribute to the development of innovative solutions and better waste management on an international level. The benefits do not stop with the companies involved, public authorities will be able to use the results of InterWaste to inform companies about sustainable waste management, helping to create a new “value chain”

The CEO of CertotticaGroup, Corrado Facco, underlines the importance of these projects for the future of eyewear, highlighting Certottica’s ambition to be among the first in the world to study these important new developments, at a time when the digital and green transition will radically change the reality of manufacturing.

Through these projects, Certottica demonstrates its commitment to promoting sustainability and innovation in the eyewear sector, helping to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
