Set in the stupendous setting of Valle del Biois, considered one of the most beautiful valleys in the Dolomites, is the microcosm in which Albino Luciani found the spiritual peace and religious vocation that made him Pope John Paul I.
This is a cultural itinerary to discover the places where he was born and spent his life, an itinerary of art, nature and beauty that does not struggle with the concept of the Sacred.

Starting out from the Albino Luciani Museum, the MusAL, managed by the Pope Luciani Foundation, housed in a 15th-century building overlooking the town’s main square. It spreads over 4 floors carefully laid out to create a multimedia, mutisensory and innovative itinerary.

The Museum is located next to the Church of St. John the Baptist: the church saw the maturation of Albino Luciani’s vocation. Several important figures in the artistic and religious spheres were baptised at its baptismal font. In fact, inside the church one can admire works of great value such as the tabernacle by Andrea Brustolon – a sculptor and carver who played a leading role in Venetian Baroque – one of the organs built by the famous organ builder Gaetano Callido – the altar by the Belluno sculptor Dante Moro, and the statues and bas-reliefs by Amedeo dal Pos.

We move on to the Birth House, open to the public from 2019 and inaugurated in 2022, with the laying of the statue of Carlo Balljana, offered by Remo Mosole, and blessed by Cardinal Stella, honorary citizen of Canale d’Agordo. Here you can walk through the rooms Luciani lived his daily life in, such as the bedroom he shared with his brother Edoardo, to whom he was very close, and in which there are various personal items, or the stùa (stube) where the Pope was born, as well as the kitchen and rooms used by the Luciani family.

The Casa delle Regole, a building dating back to 1640 and located in the historic centre of Canale d’Agordo, housed the Six Regole of the Bios Valley, which were an integral part of the territory’s administrative system. Here you can admire the characteristic frescoed façade decorated with paintings of saints.

We then come to a national monument of extraordinary artistic value decorated with frescoes by Paris Bordone, a pupil of Titian, the Church of San Simon, in Vallada Agordina, documented from 1185. The adjacent Schola dei Battuti (1361), seat of the Confraternity of the same name, features an interesting cycle of frescoes.

But in addition to the attractions of a historical, artistic and cultural nature, the experiential aspect of the route should not be underestimated, characterised by the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross): a footpath of about 2 km that starts from Piazza Papa Luciani and unfolds along 15 stations with tiles by the artist Franco Murer, arranged along Via Cavallera that runs alongside the Biois torrent, in the direction of Falcade.

From the main square, one can admire the beautiful and unspoilt Valle di Garés and its Comelle waterfalls.
