The connection between Titian and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco is best known through famous, and controversial, works such as Christ Carrying the Cross, but his name is also associated with the large woodcut depicting Saint Roch and scenes from his life, as well as the splendid Annunciation, the first major work to be installed in the confraternity’s monumental headquarters.
Less well known, however, is the actual extent of the master’s involvement in the life of the confraternity, of which he was a member at least since the 1520s, and in the decoration of its buildings: from the events involving the young Tintoretto to the unfulfilled commission for the large canvas intended for the Albergo hall.
The aim is to offer a comprehensive reinterpretation of the sources, bringing works of art, documents, and historiographical tradition into dialogue, in order to explore the complex relationships that bound Titian to the Venetian confraternity.
MARIA AGNESE CHIARI MORETTO WIEL is an art historian and holds a Ph.D. in Art History (1989), specializing in 16th-century Venetian painting and printmaking and in the history of the ancient Scuole of Venice. She is the author of approximately 150 scholarly publications and holds prominent positions at the Ateneo Veneto and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.
Since 1981, he has taught the history of Venetian art at the Venice campus of Wake Forest University. He has also taught at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the San Lorenzo Giustiniani Higher Institute of Religious Sciences, Duke University, and Venice International University.
She has curated major exhibitions and served on the scientific committees of international conferences and initiatives dedicated primarily to Tintoretto. She is currently a member of the scientific committee for the conference dedicated to Giovanni Antonio Fumiani.
In addition to her academic work, she has been actively involved in promoting art through videos, television documentaries, and art-historical consulting for private clients and auction houses. Of particular significance is her collaboration with the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, where she has overseen projects for the preservation, enhancement, and restoration of the artistic heritage, including Titian’s Annunciation and Tintoretto’s Crucifixion.

450 years after the death of the great Titian, at 11:00 a.m. in the 17th-century Palazzo Tiziano l’Oratore, home to the Fondazione Centro Studi Tiziano, Antiga Edizioni will present Antonio Chiades’ book Vita di Tiziano (2026).
Speakers will include the author, who will deliver a brief monologue he composed himself, drawn from the play “Io son Tiziano” (I Am Titian), which premiered on July 31, 2026, in the Renaissance cloister of the Gregorian Seminary in Belluno, as well as Antiga Edizioni’s editorial director, Andrea Simionato, and the architectural historian, museologist, and former curator of the Correr Museum in Venice, Andrea Bellieni. The event will be accompanied by piano music performed by Lorenzo Tonon.
