Dino Buzzati, a writer from Belluno, certainly had his reasons for naming Treviso “The Little Athens”: in the historical period between the two World Wars, Treviso welcomed numerous poets and artists and is still an important hub of cultural tourism. It is a city of art with 11 museum venues, 10 libraries, 5 theatres and some sixty major events, including five literary prizes, one of which bears the name of Giuseppe Mazzotti, a writer from Treviso who made his city his spiritual refuge, his inspirational muse, his locus amoenus, and not surprisingly.
Because the most distinctive characteristic of Treviso is the sense of peace and serenity that pervades anyone who wanders through the cobbled streets of the historic centre, immersed in an atmosphere of other times. With all the comforts of a high-class modern city, Treviso is a true open-air museum which should be visited and admired in slow-motion. The canals of Treviso and the bridges that cross them give the city a timeless charm, with arcades and loggias reflecting on the calm waters, creating a panoramic view worthy of a postcard. With its mediaeval walls, Renaissance palaces, the Duomo, with its frescoes by Pordenone, and the Church of San Nicolò, with its magnificent paintings by Tomaso da Modena, the city’s historic centre totally satisfies the hunger for beauty and culture of even the most discerning palates.
Speaking of palate and taste, one cannot fail to recognise the predominant role that local products, recipes and typical cuisine play in the city’s culture, roots and identity. Prosecco, envied and imitated all over the world, tiramisù, to which a high-level competition between chefs and restaurateurs is dedicated every year, IGP red radicchio, white asparagus and Casatella: products that tell the story of a territory, of good food and Made In Italy excellence taste after taste, that are rediscovered as new at every tasting and that never go out of fashion.
For those who prefer life and in particular exhibitions to taste, in Treviso you can visit the Museo Civico Luigi Bailo, dedicated to an important Treviso man of culture, which has recently been renovated and houses a vast collection of works of art ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, confirming once again the nature and rich cultural heritage of the city.
If you prefer literature and poetry as an form of art, you cannot miss the “Città Giardino”, a residential district of Treviso located within the city walls, between Porta Santi Quaranta, Borgo Cavour and San Nicolò. This district is known for its refined and elegant 19th- and 20th-century villas, surrounded by large gardens and green spaces, but above all by a curious peculiarity: walking through the quiet streets of this district, on the pavements you will discover engraved quotes from poems and famous literary phrases, guiding visitors on a surprising journey. High-level culture, in Treviso, can also be heard: among the various events, art and theatre reviews and music festivals, it is impossible not to mention Suoni Di Marca, the musical event that is usually held in summer on the ancient walls, hosting internationally renowned artists and further delighting the senses of citizens and visitors.
As proof of Treviso’s value as a city of art, in 2014 it was proposed as a village in which to hold an information internship on the Rotte del Cagnan, by the journalists and communicators of the International Association of European Borghi del Gusto and Altratavola (European Boroughs of Taste and Altratavola), which is committed to enhancing and promoting the knowledge and development of local cultures, linking little-known European villages and territories through cultural and institutional exchanges of a wine and food, historical, environmental, artistic and professional nature.
Whether you are a passionate lover of art, top-level music or gourmet, in search of authentic flavours, or simply a traveller in search of a fascinating modern destination with a beauty that seems to have stood the test of time, in Treviso you can find culture declined in all its forms. You just have to try them all and find the one that suits you best.
